VTNE Plan

VTNE pacing calculator

Short answer

The VTNE is a 3-hour, 180-minute exam containing 150 scored operational questions and 20 pilot questions that are embedded and not marked differently. That is 170 questions in 180 minutes, or about 63 seconds per question. Because pilot items are indistinguishable and still consume time, there is no way to skip them — plan the pace against all 170.

150 questions are scored; the 20 pilot questions are embedded and cannot be identified.

Pace only. AAVSB sets the official format; confirm in the current Candidate Information Handbook.

How this works

Question counts and the 180-minute limit come from the VTNE Candidate Information Handbook. Pace is total time divided by all 170 questions, including pilot items, because they take the same clock. The ahead/behind figure compares questions completed against what the published pace predicts at the minutes you enter.

Worked examples

Ninety minutes in, the published pace predicts 85 of 170 questions answered — exactly halfway. Finishing question 70 at that point is 15 behind, roughly 16 minutes of debt against a 63-second pace, which usually means calculation-heavy pharmacology items are taking too long and should be flagged and returned to.
