VTNE Plan

VTNE eligibility and the application route

Short answer

Before applying for the VTNE you check your eligibility pathway with AAVSB, apply and pay the $375 fee, then schedule within the examination window at a PSI test centre. AAVSB owns and administers the exam and reports your score to the jurisdiction, but credentialing is granted by the state or province where you will practise, not by AAVSB.

The sequence

  1. Review your pathway. AAVSB publishes eligibility pathways; check which one applies before you pay anything.
  2. Apply and pay the $375 application fee by card or pre-paid voucher.
  3. Schedule within your examination window at a PSI test centre; accommodations under the ADA or the Canadian Human Rights Act are requested during the application.
  4. Take the exam: 170 questions in 180 minutes.
  5. Get your score in the MyAAVSB portal within three days.
  6. Apply for your credential with your state or provincial board — AAVSB provides the score but does not license or credential technicians.

Regulated and non-regulated jurisdictions

AAVSB maintains a reference list of regulated and non-regulated jurisdictions and a board directory. Requirements for credentialing — including whether the VTNE is required at all — are set by the jurisdiction, so confirm with your board before planning a testing window.

Retaking

If you do not pass, you reapply and pay the full fee for another attempt. Use the diagnostic and the study-plan generator to decide whether you are ready before you commit to a window, because moving that window is limited to one $90 transfer.
